The Estepona City Council will authorize the filling of swimming pools and guarantee the supply with the start-up of the desalination plant in May.

The City Council has just put into operation two brackish water wells in the Padrón area that generate 2,000 cubic meters per day and is working on the construction of other wells to add another 3,400 cubic meters per day.

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has announced that during the month of June work will begin on the installation of the containerized desalination plant in the area of the Castor River, which will be able to generate 8,000 cubic meters per day of fresh water in a first phase.

Communal and private swimming pools

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has announced that the City Council will authorize the filling of community and private swimming pools this summer after verifying that the water supply is guaranteed in the municipality this summer and after the Junta de Andalucía has left in the hands of local administrations this decision.

After the latest rains that have placed the water capacity of the region at levels similar to those recorded last year and the new municipal infrastructure works that are being promoted to incorporate up to 16,300 cubic meters per day into the network, the City Council considers that it can be allow the use of swimming pools in urbanizations and individuals during the summer season.

The councilor explained that the Estepona City Council has been working since last year on the implementation of new water infrastructure in the face of the drought situation. Among the first measures is the installation of a dewatering plant around the Padrón River, which will begin operating in May and will produce 2,900 cubic meters of fresh water per day.

New desalination plant operational from June and new water resources

Added to this is the containerized desalination plant in the Castor River area, which has been in the manufacturing process since December and is expected to begin installation in June. This project will produce 8,000 cubic meters per day in its first phase. The City Council is also adapting the 53,000 square meter plot on which this municipal infrastructure will be located.

Added to all of this is the adaptation and commissioning of two wells in the Padrón area, which had not been used since the 90s, and which together allow 2,000 cubic meters per day to be incorporated into the supply network. On the other hand, the City Council has obtained authorizations from the Junta de Andalucía to carry out new surveys that allow the execution of new brackish wells, which would provide up to 3,400 cubic meters per day.

On the other hand, the mayor has announced that the Estepona City Council is working on creating a system that certifies swimming pools that, due to their sustainable characteristics, make responsible use of water. In this sense, aspects such as having protective awnings that prevent water evaporation or purifiers with water recovery, among others, will be valued. Those that obtain this certificate will be guaranteed their use in periods of drought.

Likewise, the councilor has indicated that, although water resources are assured for this summer, it is important that we all make responsible use of water and that the different public administrations work on the implementation of infrastructures that guarantee the supply in areas where the tourism sector has an important economic weight.

Water Efficiency

The mayor explained that all the measures being carried out by the Estepona City Council will also have a favorable impact on the rest of the municipalities in the region, since the water produced in the city will prevent the use of common resources that have existed until now. Furthermore, the City Council has indicated that they will make supportive use of the water produced by the new infrastructures and has shown itself willing to collaborate with the rest of the municipalities with which it shares the high-speed supply network.

García Urbano recalled that the Estepona City Council has carried out numerous works in recent years so that the technical performance of the supply network exceeds 85 percent efficiency, almost 10 percentage points more than the annual average for Spanish cities. In this way, water losses and leaks are avoided for better use of this resource.
